Summer Work and Travel is a cultural exchange program of the United States Department of State. It allows full-time university students to spend their summer break living and working in the United States on a J-1 exchange visitor visa.
Participants take seasonal jobs in places that need extra staff over the summer — resorts, national parks, hotels, amusement parks, restaurants and retail. The work pays, but the point of the program is the exchange: living in an American community, working alongside Americans, and travelling afterwards.
Who can apply
- Enrolled full-time at a university and returning to studies afterwards
- Conversational English, enough to work with the public
- Summer break that matches the program dates
- Able to attend a visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate

Four stages, one application year
The program runs across most of an academic year. Knowing when payment falls matters, because it determines what can still be refunded.
Application
You send us your documents. We check them and submit your file to a designated sponsor.
Job offer and confirmation
You accept a job offer and pay the program fee. Your DS-2019 form is issued after this point.
Visa interview
You apply for the J-1 visa and attend your interview. We prepare you for it beforehand.
Work and travel
You work your season, then use your remaining time to travel before flying home.

Not included
- U.S. visa application fee payable to the consulate
- Airfare
- Housing and living costs in the United States
- Any bank charges applied on the sender's side
Program fee. The fee depends on the season and the placement, and we confirm it to you in writing before anything is payable. Cancellation and refund terms are set out in your written agreement. All fees are quoted and charged in U.S. dollars, and the amount is the same whether you pay by bank transfer or by card.
